Pre-Staining Services
We stain your cedar fence boards at our shop, before a single one goes in your yard.
Almost everybody stains a fence the other way around. The fence goes up, and then somebody shows up with a sprayer and coats it while it is standing three feet from your siding, your cars, your flower beds, and whatever else is back there.
That is when stain ends up where nobody wanted it.
Nothing gets sprayed in your yard, because nothing gets sprayed in your yard. The boards arrive already finished. We build the fence out of them.
How it works
- Boards are run through our staining machine at our office. Every board goes through the same way, which means every board comes out the same.
- All six sides get coated. Both faces, both edges, both ends. On a fence that is stained after assembly, the overlapping faces and the backs of the boards against the rails never see a drop, because you physically cannot reach them once the fence is together.
- The boards come to your property finished, and we build with them.
- Fasteners go in last. The screw heads stay clean and crisp instead of getting buried under a coat of stain. It is a small thing that you notice every time you walk past it.
What that actually means for you
The product
We use Expert Stain and Seal. It is an oil-based stain, which matters more than most people realize. A solid stain behaves like paint and forms a film on the surface, and a film on wood that gets wet holds the moisture against it. That is how you get rot faster, not slower. An oil-based stain penetrates instead of sitting on top.
There are multiple color choices. We will walk you through them when we scope the fence.
Cedar only
We only offer pre-staining on cedar. It is the material the process is built around and the one it works on, so if you are putting in vinyl, chain link, aluminum, or a pressure-treated fence, this is not a service we can add.
What to expect
| Lead time | Pre-staining adds days to the job. The boards have to be run and finished before we can start building. It is worth knowing that up front when you are planning around a date. |
| Pricing | Priced by the job, not by the foot. Fence size, board count, and color all factor in, so it comes as part of your quote rather than as a line item you have to guess at. |
| Availability | Cedar fences only. |
If you want a stained cedar fence and you would rather not have a sprayer running next to your house, tell us at the estimate and we will price it in. It is easier to plan for at the start than to add on later.
