What we check

• Ledger board and flashing. The number one cause of deck collapse. We check how it’s attached, what fasteners were used, and whether water is getting in behind it.
• Footings and posts. Depth, frost line, and the post-to-footing and post-to-beam connections.
• Beams and joists. Span, spacing, rot, insect damage, and whether the hangers were nailed correctly.
• Railings and stairs. Height, baluster spacing, rail post attachment, stringer and tread condition.
• Decking surface. Fastener condition, soft spots, and how much service life is realistically left.
• Code. How the deck measures up against current residential code for your municipality.
